Understanding Electricity Costs in South Africa
Electricity bills are usually driven by your monthly kWh consumption, your tariff category, and VAT. A block tariff model means the first portion of usage is charged at one rate and higher usage at a higher rate. Even if the difference in cents per kWh seems small, bills can climb quickly once household usage goes above 600 kWh in a month.
This calculator provides an estimate for planning and budgeting. It uses approximate 2025/2026 Eskom-style rates and adds 15% VAT to the monthly energy total. Actual billed values can differ based on municipality, network/service charges, fixed charges, and your exact supply category.
